Meat Institute Submits Comments to WHO Regarding Draft Guidelines for Saturated and Trans Fat

The Meat Institute submitted comments in response to the World Health Organization's (WHO) draft guidelines regarding saturated fatty acid and trans-fatty acid intake for adults and children. WHO, in May, issued draft guidelines that recommend adults and children consume no more than 10 percent of calories from saturated fat and only one percent or less of calories from trans fats. The guidelines are intended to provide recommendations regarding the intake of saturated fatty acids and trans-fatty acids to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases in adults and children, according to WHO.

The Meat Institute's comments state WHO should base policies on the totality of the available scientific evidence, and cites research that suggests saturated fats may not be as harmful to humans as previously believed. Instead of vilifying individual nutrients, the Meat Institute contends, WHO should foster a total diet approach, where all foods can fit in moderation when combined with physical activity, for optimal health outcomes.

The comments also underscore the safety of naturally occurring trans-fatty acids and saturated fatty acids in the diet. According to the comments, it is not always possible to reduce both saturated fatty acids and trans-fatty acids in products and retain the same product functionality.
