Meat Institute Submits Comments Regarding Consumer Outreach and Education on the Use of Biotech in Food Production

The Meat Institute encouraged USDA, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to coordinate to develop consumer outreach and education initiatives that explain the safety and benefits of biotechnology in food production. "Shedding a positive light on biotechnology, alleviating consumer concerns, and implementing a transparent and detailed rulemaking process for the [National Bioengineered Food] Disclosure Law should help the public better understand the importance of, and the science behind, the use of biotechnology in agriculture," the Meat Institute stated in comments submitted to FDA. These messages, the comments continued, should reach consumers using established platforms of information-sharing including the internet, media and people they know.
