Meat Institute Calls on Secretary Perdue to Reject Removal of Carrageenan from the National List

The Meat Institute urged Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to reject the National Organic Standards Board's (NOSB) recommendation to remove carrageenan from the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (National List) for use in organic foods. In a letter sent last week to Secretary Perdue, the Meat Institute detailed concerns regarding NOSB's recommendation to delist carrageenan, taking issue with the process by which the material was considered, the evidence cited by NOSB for its determination that carrageenan is not essential and the unintended and adverse consequences of accepting the NOSB recommendation and banning carrageenan from the U.S. organic market. The Meat Institute's letter emphasized the lack of scientific evidence to warrant removing carrageenan from the National List and discussed supply chain and regulatory challenges that could result from delisting carrageenan. The Meat Institute previously filed comments encouraging the NOSB to keep carrageenan on the National List as an approved substance for producing organic products.
