President Donald Trump nominated former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue to be the next Agriculture Secretary. Perdue served two terms as governor, from 2003 to 2011, and was an original member of Trump's agricultural advisory team. Prior to serving as governor, Perdue spent 11 years in the Georgia State Senate. Perdue currently owns several agriculture-related businesses, including Perdue Partners and Houston Fertilizer and Grain Co. Inc., and is a managing partner of AGrowStar, which operates grain elevators in Georgia and South Carolina. In addition, he served on the board of the National Grain and Feed Association and is a former president of two regional groups: Georgia Feed and Grain and Southeastern Feed and Grain. Perdue earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Georgia in 1971.

In a statement , Meat Institute President and CEO Barry Carpenter welcomed the nomination of Perdue, citing his extensive knowledge and experience in the agricultural sector. "We look forward to working with Governor Perdue to ensure the safety of the nation's meat and poultry supply and to address the challenges facing our industry," Carpenter said.
