FDA Extends Comment Period to Redefine 'Healthy' Claim for Food LabelingWednesday, January 4, 2017
(North American Meat Institute)
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is extending the comment period for a docket to receive information and comments on the use of the term "healthy" in the labeling of human food products. Comments are due by April 26, 2017.
Redefining "healthy" is part of an overall plan to provide consumers with information and tools to enable them to easily and quickly make food choices consistent with public health recommendations and to encourage the development of healthier foods by the industry, according to FDA. Food manufacturers can continue to use the term "healthy" on foods that meet the current regulatory definition while FDA considers how to redefine the term as a nutrient content claim.share on facebook share on twitter
