Facts About the Cattle & Beef Market

As summer grilling season drives strong consumer demand, the Meat Institute is reminding stakeholders that high beef prices are primarily the result of market fundamentals. The U.S. cattle herd remains at its lowest level in 75 years following years of drought and other supply challenges, while consumer demand for beef continues to reach record levels. According to the Livestock Marketing Information Center, retail fresh beef demand reached its highest level since 2000 during the first quarter of 2026.

Record cattle prices have also placed significant financial pressure on beef processors. While cattle producers are receiving historically high prices, packers have experienced sustained negative margins due to elevated cattle costs, with industry estimates showing continued losses across the beef processing sector over the past two years.
