FNS Issues Final Rule on Flexibilities for Milk, Whole Grains and Sodium Requirements in Child Nutrition Programs

The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) published a final rule extending menu flexibilities in implementing school nutrition standards for milk, whole grains and sodium. These targeted modifications are effective for School Year (SY) 2019-2020, which begins July 1, 2019. Specifically, the final rule provides schools in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program more time for gradual sodium reduction by retaining Sodium Target 1 through the end of SY 2023-2024, requiring compliance with Sodium Target 2 in SY 2024-2025 and eliminating the Final Target that would have become effective in SY 2022-2023. The rule becomes effective February 11, 2019.
