Meat Institute Submits Comments on FDA’s Nutrition Innovation Strategy

The Meat Institute submitted comments in response to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Nutrition Innovation Strategy (Strategy). According to FDA, the Strategy would promote public health through improved nutrition and would encourage industry innovation to create healthier products that consumers seek. FDA identified several elements to the strategy: modernizing claims; modernizing ingredient labels; modernizing standards of identity; implementing Nutrition Facts and menu labeling; and reducing sodium.

The Meat Institute’s comments generally supported the Strategy, but also offered recommendations that FDA should consider prior to implementation. Specifically, the Meat Institute stated, that although FDA’s strategy addresses food products under its jurisdiction, regulatory changes could impact the labeling of, or claims made about, meat and poultry products, which are regulated by the Food Safety and Inspection Service. The Meat Institute contended food label claims should remain voluntary and said it is premature to discuss developing a single icon to denote the claim “healthy” on food products prior to revising the definition of “healthy.”

The Institute also encouraged FDA to consider the totality of the scientific evidence when developing sodium reduction targets, including awaiting the completion of a Dietary Reference Intake review for sodium and potassium currently underway at the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
