FSIS Issues Notice Requiring Salmonella Testing for Imported Beef Products Sampled for STEC

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reissued a notice requiring Salmonella analysis for imported beef products sampled for Shiga Toxin-Producing E. coli (STEC). The notice states raw beef samples, including import MT08 and MT51 samples, collected for STEC analysis will also be analyzed for Salmonella. Because FSIS does not consider Salmonella an adulterant in raw meat products, a positive test result for Salmonella in imported raw beef products will not require a regulatory control action and the product is not to be refused entry. The notice also provides instructions for notifying the importer of record when a sample tests positive for Salmonella but is negative for STECs.
