Meat Institute Provides Comments at FDA Meeting on Cell Cultured Meat Products

Meat Institute Director of Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Tiffany Lee, DVM, Ph.D., last week provided comments during the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) public meeting convened to discuss foods produced using animal cell culture technology. In her comments, Dr. Lee stated, “primary jurisdiction over the regulation of ‘cell cultured’ meat products rests with the United States Department of Agriculture,” and expressed disappointment that no USDA officials were on any of the meeting’s panels. Dr. Lee said there should be a comprehensive inspection system regulating cell cultured meat and poultry products to ensure they are wholesome and safe for consumption and that they are labeled and marketed in a manner that ensures a level playing field in the marketplace. USDA, according to Dr. Lee’s comments, is uniquely equipped to accomplish that task.
