Meat Institute, USHSLA Submit Joint Comments Regarding Branding Requirements for Bovines Imported into the U.S. from Mexico

The Meat Institute, U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association and Leather Industries of America submitted joint comments to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) regarding the proposed rule, “Branding Requirements for Bovines Imported into the United States from Mexico.” Although the organizations expressed support for the purpose and spirit behind the rule, they cited concerns regarding the proposal to move from the butt to the shoulder, and increase the size of, the 'M' brand for imported breeding cattle. Both actions, the organizations contend, would significantly devalue the hide when used for leather production purposes. Instead, the organizations encourage APHIS to align the identification requirements for imported breeding cattle with feeder cattle, and to treat imported cattle from Mexico the same as cattle imported from Canada. The organizations also recommend the use of ear tattoos or other acceptable identification methods, rather than the use of brands, for all imported cattle.
