Memo Details New Laws Affecting California Employers

The law firm Faegre Baker Daniels released a memo summarizing laws enacted in 2017 by the California legislature that affect employers with operations in the state. The laws provide broader gender-related discrimination, pay equity and anti-retaliation protections; expanded authority for investigations and enforcement by the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement; and additional worksite immigration enforcement protections. The laws also expand parental leave to employers with 20-49 employees, ban compensation history inquiries and limit the use of an applicant’s criminal background. The memo explains how employers may be affected by the changes and presents compliance tips. The laws became effective January 1, 2018, unless otherwise stipulated in the memo.
