Meat Institute, USHSLA Call for Safeguarding Trucking Provisions in Updated NAFTA

Wednesday, November 22, 2017

(North American Meat Institute)

The Meat Institute and U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA) joined 100 other organizations in sending a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer urging him to protect the North American Free Trade Agreement's (NAFTA) cross-border trucking provisions in a renegotiated agreement. The organizations contend eliminating NAFTA trucking, including investment protections, would have a long-term, negative impact on their businesses and would decrease companies' competitiveness. "Permitting Mexican carriers to haul freight beyond the border zones will help alleviate some of the congestion at the border, creating more efficiency through the system," the letter continues.
