Meat Industry Urges Administration to Prioritize Beef Trade During China Visit

The Meat Institute, National Cattlemen's Beef Association and U.S. Meat Export Federation jointly requested that the Administration prioritize issues related to expanding market access for U.S. beef during President Donald Trump's upcoming trip to China. In a letter sent to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the three organizations encouraged the Administration to address technical requirements in the recent agreement allowing U.S. beef exports to China for the first time in 14 years. Specifically, the organizations call on the Administration to reach a clear understanding about the products that are included in the scope of the agreement and to open a dialogue regarding ways to accelerate and normalize the Chinese quarantine clearance process, especially for chilled beef.

In addition to addressing technical issues, the Administration should request that the Chinese government eliminate duties on beef imports from the U.S. to ensure that U.S. beef is accorded the same tariff treatment as beef from Australia, the country's principal competitor for grain-fed beef in the Chinese market, according to the letter. The organizations also stressed the importance of reminding the Chinese government of its World Trade Organization obligation to adopt science-based standards for production technologies, including hormones and beta agonists.
