July is National Hot Dog Month and the Meat Institute and National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) actively encouraged positive coverage of hot dogs at the start of the month and around Independence Day. The NHDSC kicked off the month with a release highlighting recent polling asking people their favorite meat in hot dogs and whether they prefer natural casing or skinless dogs. Beef was the most popular hot dog meat choice, while natural casing won out over skinless dogs. People were also asked with what famous person they’d most like to share a hot dog. The winner was Betty White, who has said she enjoys hot dogs on the set of her TV show.

The polling data and hot dog facts generated numerous interviews from national outlets, including NPR, NBC Sports Radio and Trending Topics USA; live interviews on two of the most popular stations in Detroit; a conversation with a popular San Francisco sports talk show; and a lengthy taped segment on WGN in Chicago, as well as many smaller markets. Fox News , Fortune and USA Today also featured the Meat Institute and NHDSC in positive stories, while many other outlets used NAMI and NHDSC resources for their stories, including Sports Illustrated , an ESPN SportsCenter and Reader's Digest .

Meanwhile, the Meat Institute worked with reporters from the Associated Press and Chicago Tribune for stories focused on the safety of natural sources of nitrite.
