The Ports Coalition, to which the Meat Institute and the U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association belong, applauded early contract negotiation discussions by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) that have resulted in a three-year contract extension offer. The Coalition, in a multi-association letter , also called on ILWU members to support the proposed contract when they meet to consider it later this summer. The organizations stated that an early contract extension should serve as a model for future negotiations, and will provide the stability and predictability needed to benefit the U.S. economy and enhance U.S. global competitiveness. The current ILWU-PMA contract expires July 1, 2019. Early approval by ILWU members would avert a repeat of the 2014-2015 West Coast ports labor dispute that resulted in significant port congestion and cost the economy more than $7 billion.
