Agreement Restores U.S. Beef Access to China

The Trump Administration last week announced it reached an agreement with the Chinese government to allow the import of U.S. beef into China effective July 16, 2017. This agreement is the final step in reopening the Chinese market to U.S. beef, following a 14-year ban due to concerns about bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The Meat Institute and other industry partners asked President Trump to raise the issue of restoring U.S. beef access to China in his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in April.

Meat Institute Chairman and Bob Evans Farms President and CEO Mike Townsley applauded the agreement saying, "High quality beef is in high demand in China, so the deal has great potential for both our businesses and the U.S. economy as a whole."

Meat Institute President and CEO Barry Carpenter commended the administration adding, "The beef deal is a significant, concrete accomplishment resulting from the 100-day plan established by President Trump and President Xi at their summit. We are thankful for the hard work on the issue by both leaders."

The Chinese market is estimated to be worth $2.6 billion. Asian countries already are some of the largest markets for U.S. beef, with Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan representing four of the top six export markets, accounting for $3.6 billion in value in 2016.

Details of the agreement have yet to be disclosed. The Meat Institute will provide updates as more information becomes available.
