The Meat Institute signed a multi-association letter to President Donald Trump urging that the Secretary of Agriculture establish an office of the Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at USDA, as required by the 2014 Farm Bill. The organizations said the creation of an under secretary position would help modernize USDA's trade organizational structure, which has remained unchanged since 1978. The organizations also stressed that this position would bring unified, high-level representation to key trade negotiations with senior and foreign officials and within the Executive Branch. In addition, the organizations noted that an under secretary would be effective at confronting evolving barriers to trade and opening new markets for U.S. farm and food products.
