San Francisco Grants One-Year Waiver for Meat Tray Requirements

The San Francisco Department of Environment, authorized by the Food Service and Packaging Waste Reduction Ordinance, granted a one-year waiver allowing the continued sale and distribution to consumers, until July 1, 2018, of raw or butchered meat or fish packaged in trays made with polystyrene foam or other material that is not compostable or recyclable, only if the product was packaged outside San Francisco and is sold or distributed as prepackaged.

The Department issued this waiver based on its assessment of the minimum time required for meat packagers outside San Francisco to provide the San Francisco market with raw or butchered meat or fish that is packaged in non-polystyrene foam and compostable or recyclable tray alternatives. The Department will consider extending the waiver period beyond July 1, 2018, if it receives a progress report, by March 1, 2018, from meat packaging stakeholders or distributors regarding the efforts and progress made toward providing San Francisco stores with raw or butchered meat or fish packaged in compostable or recyclable non-polystyrene foam tray alternatives.
