Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has called on farmers, ranchers, agribusiness owners and other industry groups to urge Congress to pass trade promotion authority (TPA) for President Obama and to support the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. Vilsack noted that TPP, which is a treaty with 11 nations in the Asia-Pacific region, could reduce tariffs on agricultural goods by 200 percent in some cases, and would open an export market worth approximately $123 billion. Vilsack also stressed that TPP negotiations allow the U.S. to influence key trade issues, including labor rights, environmental standards and intellectual property protections, before other countries gain greater input.
