Lean Finely Textured Beef

Lean Finely Textured Beef (LFTB) is a safe, wholesome and federally inspected type of lean beef that is used in ground beef products. Unfortunately, some media have inaccurately and inappropriately called the product as “pink slime” – a gross mischaracterization. As a result, some confusion exists about how the product is made. The North American Meat Institute has developed a variety of resources about how ground beef is made, what role LFTB plays and how to communicate accurately about both.
