Annual Meat Conference Exhibitors Donate More Than 5000 Pounds of Meat and Poultry to Atlanta Food BanksFriday, February 21, 2014
Atlanta, GA, February 21, 2014 – This week more than 5,000 pounds of meat and poultry were donated to the Second Mount Vernon Baptist Church’s Operation Andrew and Chosen Generations Outreach by exhibitors at the Annual Meat Conference, an event hosted by the American Meat Institute (AMI) and Food Marketing Institute (FMI) at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis February 16-18.
The packages of steak, ground beef, pork, turkey, chicken, lamb and other cuts were highlighted during the conference’s Product Tasting Reception which featured more than 50 exhibitors, many of whom were able to donate their meat that was not used at the reception.
"The American Meat Institute has a twenty five year partnership with our nation's food banks called "Meating the Need" through which our member companies donate meat and poultry products" said AMI President and CEO James H. Hodges. "We are pleased to have continued this initiative with a large donation to the Atlanta community."
FMI President and CEO Leslie G. Sarasin said, “The significant joint food donation by FMI and AMI in the Atlanta area is one spectrum in the rainbow of efforts maintained by our respective member companies to help address the sustenance needs of our nation. We are proud to be part of the 894 million pounds of food that the food retail industry annually contributes in support of local food banks.”
Annual Meat Conference exhibitors have donated thousands of pounds of meat and poultry to host communities over the years including more than 6,000 pounds in Nashville in 2013. AMI and its members have also donated millions of pounds of meat through its partnership with Feeding America since 1989.
