New Meat MythCrusher Video Challenges the Perception that Local Food is Safer and More Environmentally FriendlyThursday, July 18, 2013
Washington D.C.--The American Meat Institute (AMI), in conjunction with the American Meat Science Association (AMSA), today launched the latest installment of their Meat MythCrusher video series, which seeks to bust some of the most common myths surrounding the meat and poultry industry.
The new video addresses the myth that local food is always safer and more environmentally friendly than food that has been trucked a long way. As interest in buying locally raised meat and poultry products has risen, many consumers believe that buying local has a dramatic impact on the environmental impact and the safety of their food, but University of Minnesota Professor Ryan Cox, Ph.D. says local foods can be excellent options, but simply being local doesn’t always mean safer or more efficient.
“When we go to local foods, we do step back in efficiencies. We’re looking at smaller scale and can’t take advantage of some of those efficiencies and economies of larger scale,” explains Dr. Cox, adding, “Fundamentally speaking, the microorganisms that will make people sick do not know the difference between local and traditionally produced foods.”
While it can be helpful to support local businesses and agriculture when possible, Cox notes that some products are not available in many areas locally year round and highlights the advantages of conventionally produced meat and poultry including transportation efficiency and food safety technologies.
The Meat MythCrusher series includes more than 20 videos and has accumulated more than 42,000 views on YouTube since its launch in 2011. Recently, the Meat MythCrusher team examined the truth behind the process of making ground beef. Other video topics include myths surrounding hormone use in animals, meat safety, sodium nitrite, meat’s environmental impact and more.
