American Meat Institute Applauds U.S.-Japan Agreement on Japan’s Participation in Trans-Pacific Partnership

Washington, DC – J. Patrick Boyle, president and CEO, American Meat Institute, today issued the following statement in response to reports that the USTR and Japan have reached agreement in bi-lateral trade talks. The agreement paves the way for Japan’s entry in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) as early as July.

“Japan’s inclusion in TPP trade negotiations transforms TPP from an important multi-lateral trade pact to one that is truly historic because of its size and scope. High-standards and open trade can bring tangible benefits to producers and processors, as well as to consumers not only in the U.S. and Japan, but throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

TPP provides an ideal forum for the negotiation of stronger protections for agricultural exporters. AMI strongly supports Japan’s inclusion in the July round of TPP negotiations.”


AMI represents the interests of packers and processors of beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout North America. Together, AMI’s members produce 95 percent of the beef, pork, lamb and veal products and 70 percent of the turkey products in the United States. The Institute provides legislative, regulatory, public relations, technical, scientific and educational services to the meat and poultry packing and processing industry.
