American Meat Institute Praises Congress’ Passage of Consolidated

Thursday, March 21, 2013

Washington, DC — The American Meat Institute (AMI) today praised Congress’ passage of the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2013 and its inclusion of an amendment sponsored by Senators Mark Pryor (D-AR) and Roy Blunt (R-MO) to direct $55 million to USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service from other USDA accounts to fund meat and poultry inspection.

“We appreciate Congress’ leadership and we are particularly grateful for the efforts of Senators Pryor and Blunt, who offered an amendment to fund USDA’s meat and poultry inspection program,” said AMI President J. Patrick Boyle. “We are gratified that lawmakers recognized the essential nature of meat and poultry inspection by taking this step to prevent inspector furloughs.”
