AMI's Annual Hot Dog Lunch Hits Home Run on Capitol Hill

Washington D.C., July 27, 2011 — More than 1,000 Capitol Hill lawmakers, staff, meat industry representatives and members of the media today convened at the Rayburn House Office Building Courtyard to once again celebrate National Hot Dog Month at the American Meat Institute’s (AMI) annual Hot Dog Lunch. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce designated July as National Hot Dog Month in 1957.

“The Hot Dog Lunch is a long-standing AMI tradition.  Every year, we look forward to hosting guests in celebration of this American icon in our nation’s capital,” said AMI President and CEO J. Patrick Boyle.  “Consistently, this event is one of the most widely attended social events on Capitol Hill and proves that hot dog popularity transcends party lines.”

Guests did not return to their offices hungry. AMI expected to serve more than 3,500 hot dogs, corn dogs, pretzel dogs, brats and other sausages. Any uncooked or pre-packaged leftover food was donated to a local food bank. 

The 2011 Hot Dog Lunch was co-hosted by Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK) and Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN).  The event was also sponsored by the American Bakers Association, International Bottled Water Association, American Beverage Association, Hormel Foods Corporation, DIAGEO, Snack Food Association, MillerCoors and McKee Foods Corporation. Hot Dog and sausage vendors include Farmland Foods, Sara Lee (Ball Park/State Fair), Boar’s Head Provisions Co., Inc., Smithfield Foods, Inc., Tyson Foods Inc., Kraft Foods (Oscar Mayer), Hormel Foods Corporation (Hot Dogs), Kunzler and Company and Hatfield Quality Meats.

Baseball All-Stars On-Hand

Hot dogs and baseball share a long and storied history and each year the Hot Dog Lunch pays tribute to this one-of-a-kind relationship.

Attending this year’s lunch to greet fans, sign autographs and nosh on some dogs were:

Dorrel Norman Elvert “Whitey” Herzog, former Major League Baseball manager. Most noted for his success as a manager, he led the Kansas City Royals to three consecutive playoff appearances from 1976 to 1978. Hired by Gussie Busch in 1980 to helm the St. Louis Cardinals, the Cardinals won the 1982 World Series and made two other World Series appearances in 1985 and 1987 under Herzog’s direction. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 25, 2010.

Mickey Lolich, former Major League baseball pitcher from 1962 to 1979. Lolich played the majority of his career with the Detroit Tigers and is best known for his performance in the 1968 World Series, when he allowed just five runs in three complete games, winning all three including the final and decisive game. Lolich also helped himself at the plate in Game 2, when he hit the first and only home run of his 16-year career. He remains the last pitcher to win three complete games in a single World Series, and was the last to win three at all until Randy Johnson in 2001.

Felix Millán, former second baseman from 1966 to 1977. Nicknamed “The Kitten” (“El Gatito” in Spanish), born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, Millán made his major league debut on June 2, 1966 with the Atlanta Braves, and played for Atlanta until 1973. Millán was primarily a second baseman. He played in two All-Star Games, the first in 1969 and the second in 1971; in 1970 he was named an All-Star, but was unable to participate due to injuries. In 1973, he was traded to the New York Mets, for which he played until 1977. He played for a total of 12 years. His first game was June 2, 1966, for the Atlanta Braves and his final game was August 12, 1977, for the New York Mets.

National Hot Dog & Sausage Council Announces Winners of Hot Dog Photo Contest             

In coordination with National Hot Dog Month, AMI’s National Hot Dog & Sausage Council showcased at the lunch the winners of its first annual hot dog photo contest. The Council received more than 100 entries from Germany, Iceland, Canada and all across America. Hot dogs fans young and old got into the action, submitting photos from picnics, ballparks backyards and restaurants far and wide. Nearly 1,000 votes were cast on the Council’s Facebook page (http://on.fb.me/pSULfs) and http://www.hot-dog.org/.
