AMI Foundation Recognizes 128 Meat and Poultry Plants for Worker Safety Achievements During Annual Conference

Kansas City, MO, March 9, 2011 — More than 120 meat and poultry plants today were recognized for outstanding achievements in workplace safety in a ceremony held during the American Meat Institute Foundation (AMIF) Annual Conference on Worker Safety, Human Resources and the Environment, held March 9-10, at Hyatt Regency Crown Center, Kansas City, Missouri. 

AMIF’s Worker Safety Awards Program is administered with the National Safety Council.  The various levels of awards that may be earned are based on an evaluation of each eligible plant’s actual safety performance as well as its implementation of various key components of an effective safety and health program as measured by the safety program questionnaire. 

Thirty-two plants were recognized with the highest award – the Award of Honor. Fifty-two received the second tier award called the Award of Merit. In addition, 21 plants received the Award of Commendation and 22 received a Certificate of Recognition

In presenting the awards, American Meat Institute Chairman Dennis Vignieri, president and CEO of Kenosha Beef International, praised the honorees, saying “"I’ve seen what it takes to build a safety program and that is constant vigilance and the unwavering commitment of the entire management team.  Knowing this, I must tell you that I truly respect the work you do."

The meat and poultry industry’s commitment to improving workplace safety is reflected in the significant and consistent decline in illness and injury rates among its nearly 500,000 workers over the past two decades.

 During the last 19 years, injury and illness rates in the U.S. meat industry have improved by nearly 80 percent.
