The American Meat Institute announced today that Ashley Peterson, Ph.D, has joined the Institute’s legislative affairs department.

In her new position as director of legislative affairs, Peterson will focus on food safety and environmental issues.

Peterson comes to AMI with a strong background in agriculture policy development and analysis.

Peterson obtained her Ph.D. in animal science from the University of Maryland, her Master of Science degree in animal science from Michigan State University and her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kentucky.

For the past year, Peterson has served as a Congressional Science Fellow in the office of Representative Marion Berry (D-AR), working on agriculture, energy, environment and appropriations issues.

Peterson grew up on a small cow/calf operation in central Kentucky. She and her fiancé currently raise Hampshire and Shropshire sheep on their farm in Frederick, Maryland.

“We are extremely pleased to have Ashley on board,” said AMI President and CEO J. Patrick Boyle. “Her extensive study of animal science, both inside and outside of the classroom, combined with her knowledge of agriculture policy, will make her an invaluable addition to our legislative affairs team.”
