Trade Policy Expert William Westman Named AMI Vice President of International Trade

Washington, D.C.  — The American Meat Institute (AMI) today announced that trade policy expert William Westman has been named vice president of international trade at the organization.

In his position, Westman will manage the International Trade Policy Committee and the Institute’s international trade activities.

For the past 29 years, Westman has served the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). Most recently, he served as Agricultural Minister Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, where he was responsible for the overall supervision and management of the organization’s largest overseas operation. Prior to this, Westman served as Agricultural Minister Counselor in Berlin, Germany, and Brasilia, Brazil. He has also served as assistant deputy administrator, Foreign Agricultural Affairs and Western Hemisphere officer at USDA.

Westman has extensive experience in facilitating agricultural interactions with governments, private sector companies and trade associations and has well-established relationships with government officials and international business leaders.

“Bill’s extensive experience in international trade will be a real asset to the Institute and its members,” said AMI President and CEO J. Patrick Boyle. “Increased trade is vital to the economic health and vitality of the U.S. meat and poultry sector.”

Westman earned a bachelor’s degree in natural resource management from Rutgers University and a master’s degree in forestry with a minor in agricultural economics from Virginia Tech.

AMI is also announcing the promotion of Susan Hogan to the position of director of international trade. Hogan has been with AMI since October 2003. In her new position, Hogan will work on a variety of trade issues, as well as manage international operations for the U.S. Hide, Skin & Leather Association, which is an affiliate of AMI.

AMI represents the interests of packers and processors of beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout North America. Together, AMI’s members produce 95 percent of the beef, pork, lamb and veal products and 70 percent of the turkey products in the United States. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Institute provides legislative, regulatory, public relations, technical, scientific and educational services to the industry. Its affiliate, the AMI Foundation, is a separate 501(c)3 organization that conducts research, education and information projects for the industry.
