Temple Grandin, Ph.D., associate professor of
animal science at Colorado State University,
will speak about her life with autism and her
work in improving animal welfare in the meat
and dairy industries during a special "Super
Session" at Worldwide Food Expo on Thursday,
October 29, 2009 at Chicago's McCormick Place.
In addition to Grandin's presentation,
Worldwide Food Expo will feature Super Sessions
on sustainability and market trends. The
Worldwide Food Expo will run through October
31, at McCormick Place in Chicago.
Sponsored by the American Meat Institute (AMI) and the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), Worldwide Food Expo attracts approximately 20,000 attendees from 100 countries, bringing together decision-makers at all levels of the food and beverage industry, including executives, plant managers, purchasing agents, engineers, researchers and operations managers.
Temple Grandin is the author of several books including the New York Times bestseller Animals In Translation, Animals Make Us Humane: Creating the Best Life for Animals and her latest release The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism and Asperger's. Grandin is also the subject of a soon to be released HBO Film "Temple Grandin: Thinking in Pictures" in which Claire Danes stars as Grandin. She has also been featured on Prime Time Live, 20/20, the BBC, National Public Radio and numerous other television and radio programs.
This special session will use an interactive format in which Grandin will have a conversation with moderator Janet Riley, AMI senior vice president of public affairs and members services and Animal Welfare Committee coordinator. Following the conversation, Grandin will answer audience questions about animal welfare and autism.
In addition to her teaching position, Grandin consults with the livestock, diary and meat industries about facility design, livestock behavior and animal welfare. She has authored over 300 articles in both scientific journals and livestock periodicals.
Grandin is the author of AMI's groundbreaking 1991 Recommended Animal Handling Guidelines for Meat Packers and the 1997 Good Management Practices for Animal Handling and Stunning, which featured the first ever audit for livestock welfare. The audit has been revised several times over the last decade and has become a global standard.
In addition to the session with Grandin, an exceptional line-up of educational sessions that will showcase food safety and regulation, sustainability and market trends are also on the bill.
