AMI'S 2002 Annual Convention And Innovation Showcase Will Be Held October 24 – 26 in New Orleans, LA

Washington, DC — The American Meat Institute (AMI) 2002 Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase will take place October 24 – 26, 2002, in the Queen City of the South and the home of Dixieland jazz, New Orleans, LA.

This annual event brings meat and poultry industry leaders together to focus on groundbreaking technology, innovative products and new services. Also, renowned figures from government and media outlets will discuss issues most affecting the business of the meat and poultry industry.

Slated to headline the convention’s general sessions are noted security expert Robert Gates and ABC News “20/20” reporter John Stossel.

Gates, a former CIA director and 27-year veteran of the agency, will discuss the unique security issues now facing businesses in America—from cyber security to plant and employee security. Gates has received many intelligence awards during his tenure at the CIA, including the agency’s top award, the Distinguished Intelligence Medal, three times. In New Orleans, Gates will discuss how to tailor food safety protocols to detect product tampering from inside and outside the plant as well as what improvements can be made to better secure meat and poultry production facilities.

Stossel, of ABC News “20/20,” is one of the most renowned journalists in the country and is known for his insightful, revealing and often controversial reporting. Stossel will reflect upon the benefits of freedom and the free marketplace and the forces that are threatening those concepts. Questions Stossel will address include: Will safety regulations injure more people than they might protect? Why does the media ceaselessly hype unrealistic fears? and Who are today’s real heroes?

The Innovation Showcase provides a forum for viewing new technologies and products for the meat and poultry industry. Featuring more than 150 exhibitors, the Showcase is recognized as the place for innovative industry suppliers to show their latest products and a place for informal business discussions. In addition, the convention features educational tracks including an environment/operations conference, government and public policy conference, management and finance conference and the marketing conference. The Annual Meat Industry Research Conference also will be held October 24 – 26, 2002.

New Orleans provides a colorful venue for the 2002 AMI Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase. The city, nestled in the “crescent” of the Mississippi River, boasts 35,000 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, more than 3,000 restaurants and more than 300 years of history, art and music.
