2002 AMI Annual Convention Connects New Administrators and Meat Industry Representatives

Washington, DC - New Bush administrators will dialogue with industry representatives at a special session during the American Meat Institute’s 2002 Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase in New Orleans.

As part of the Environment/Operations and Government & Public Policy conferences, meat industry representatives will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with administrators from influential regulatory agencies that influence their daily operations. The “Super Session: Coffee and Beignet with the Administrators” will be held Friday, October 25, 2002, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served first followed by presentations from the administrators.

Speakers include Donna Reifschneider, administrator of USDA’s Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA); A. Ellen Terpstra, administrator of Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) and A.J. Yates, administrator of the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS).

Donna Reifschneider, appointed in April, came to USDA from an executive committee membership at the U.S. Meat Export Federation. Reifschneider is a former president of the National Pork Producer’s Council and operates a 600-sow, 1000-hog farm in Southern Illinois with her family. Reifschneider also participates in Illinois Governor Edgar’s Commission on Animal Agriculture, the University of Illinois Blue Ribbon Task Force on Extension and the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program.

A. Ellen Terpstra left her four-year post as president and chief executive officer of the USA Rice Federation to accept an appointment last February as administrator of the Foreign Agricultural Service. Teprstra’s experience with international food and trade policy is best illustrated by her previous work with Congressional Research Service, the Office of the United States Trade Representative and the U.S. Apple Association.

A.J. Yates, new administrator of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service, accepted his post last September after eight years as deputy secretary and later under secretary at the California Department of Food and Agriculture. At CDFA, Yates oversaw a number of divisions including Food Safety, Animal Health, Inspection Services and Marketing Services. Yates served most recently as a senior consultant with Panagraph Marketing Solutions. He is active in a number of agriculture groups and serves as President of the Fresno County Farm Bureau, State Director of the California Sugar Beet Growers Association and Director of the Mid-Valley Irrigation District.

The AMI Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase provides a forum for viewing new technologies and products for the meat and poultry industry. Featuring more than 200 exhibitors, the Showcase is recognized as the place for innovative industry suppliers to show their latest products and a place for informal business discussions. In addition, the convention features separate educational conferences including environment/operations, government and public policy, management and finance and marketing. The Annual Meat Industry Research Conference also will be held October 24 – 26, 2002.
