1998 AMI Annual Convention Opens the Door to the Future:

Six comprehensive, forward-looking educational conferences in research, inspection, marketing, technology, management and the environment will be featured at the 1998 AMI Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase, September 17-19, 1998, at the Philadelphia Marriott, Philadelphia, PA.

The Meat Industry Research Conference (MIRC) offers an opportunity for meat scientists, food technologists and technical experts to learn about the best new ideas, technologies and research findings in the meat and poultry industry. Topics will include advances in food safety microbial interventions, updates on nutrition research and innovations in processing technologies. This conference begins September 16 and requires a separate registration.

The HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) Implementation Conference will examine the implementation of HACCP in the nation’s largest plants and will discuss the next phase of implementation for medium-sized plants, scheduled for January 26, 1999. Sessions will also look at HACCP from the perspectives of agency personnel, packers and processors, consumers, customers and legal professionals. In addition, attendees will receive instruction on the problems associated with different HACCP components, such as validation and verification and microtesting and microbial control.

The Marketing Conference focuses on the importance of the consumer and how the meat and poultry industry must address the challenges posed by consumers’ changing needs. Today’s consumers are very different from what they were ten years ago. The program is designed to teach industry professionals “What Your Customers and Consumers Want from You.” Sessions will feature topics like “Innovative Pricing: A New Approach to Your Business,” “Packaging: Innovations for the Future” and “Foodservice Menu and Marketing Partnerships.” This conference is a must for those wishing to remain competitive in the marketplace of the 21st Century.

To remain competitive in the meat and poultry industry, however, companies must take advantage of new tools available to them. The Technology Conference presents a wide array of cutting-edge resources, equipment and technology to prepare the industry for the future. The program includes a status report on irradiation, a discussion of supply and demand, an introduction to the information resources and sales potential of the internet and a preview of upcoming meat and poultry technology.

Armed with insightful market knowledge and new technology, management personnel must still handle a wide range of complex issues. The Management Conference is designed to prepare meat and poultry industry top management to handle these issues in the best possible way. Sessions will demonstrate how to handle a food safety crisis, including step-by-step instructions for managing product recalls; provide limited attendance, on-camera media training; discuss the importance of proper animal handling to productivity, quality and profitability; and review human resources concerns, such as sexual harassment.

On another front, recent enforcement activities and proposed regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have raised the importance of environmental compliance for the meat and poultry industry. The Environmental Conference will provide an overview of the environmental issues facing the industry, including the EPA Meat and Poultry Processing Sector Initiative. The conference will also teach attendees how maintain compliance and avoid criminal prosecution. A tour of nearby Hatfield, Inc., which features a top of-the-line water reuse system, is scheduled for the morning of Friday, September 18.

The 1998 educational program will prepare attendees for the challenges that are or will be emerging in the near future. Combined with the Innovation Showcase, this year’s program will be a valuable event for the meat and poultry industry.

Registration Information
Early registration for MIRC ’98 received by August 17, 1998, is $295 for AMI or AMSA members, and $395 for non-members. Early registration for the AMI Convention is $545 for members and $645 for non-members. A discounted early registration of $645 for members and $745 for non-members is available when registering for both the AMI Convention and MIRC. Registration for the HACCP conference is included in the AMI Convention registration fee. Registration fees increase by $100 if received after August 17.
