Annual Hot Dog Lunch Celebrates National Hot Dog Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. – More than 1,000 lawmakers, Capitol Hill staff and other special guests today will celebrate National Hot Dog Month at the American Meat Institute’s Annual Hot Dog Lunch on Capitol Hill.

The lunch will feature popular hot dog manufacturers such as Bar-S Foods Co., Hormel Foods Corporation, Oscar Mayer Foods, Ball Park Brands, Smithfield Foods and Tyson Foods. Lunch co-sponsors include the American Bakers Association, George Weston Bakeries, the International Bottled Water Association, Hormel Foods Corporation, Interstate Brands Corp., Miller Brewing Company, National Soft Drink Association and the Snack Food Association.

More than 500 pounds of hot dogs are ready to be served to attendees, along with copious amounts of mustard, relish, ketchup and onions. Washingtonians will help contribute to the nation’s substantial hot dog consumption, estimated at 20 billion hot dogs annually.

Three baseball icons will headline the event: Hall of Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins of the Chicago Cubs, All-Star infielder and Gold Glove winner Davey Johnson of the Baltimore Orioles and All-Star Frank Howard of the Washington Senators.

“The Hot Dog Lunch has become one of the most popular events on Capitol Hill and is a wonderful celebration of two great American traditions that really go hand in glove: baseball and hot dogs,” said AMI President J. Patrick Boyle.
