AMI Announces First Winners of MAPS – Environmental Action Plan

(Chicago, IL) The American Meat Institute today honored 147 plants for achievements in environmental management through AMI’s new, voluntary Environmental "MAPS" award program, The awards ceremony was held at Chicago's McCormick Place during the International Meat, Poultry & Seafood Convention & Exposition, part of Worldwide Food Expo.

"The Environmental MAPS program provides a simple, step-wise approach to achieving a complete environmental management system (EMS)," said AMI President and CEO J. Patrick Boyle. "The implementation of this EMS program throughout the meat and poultry industry is helping us achieve continual improvements in environmental management."
The acronym MAPS refers to the four different levels that facilities can achieve: M - Master; A - Achiever; P - Pioneer; and S - Star. Facilities participating in the awards program received points for their environmental systems and activities.

The program is comprised of four tiers, which guide facilities on how to begin and improve upon their environmental management systems.

• Tier 1: Environmental Master. Facilities implement a basic package of environmental policy statements and compliance criteria.
• Tier 2: Environmental Achiever. Facilities begin to identify and implement more comprehensive requirements, including development of external communication plans.
• Tier 3: Environmental Pioneer. Facilities incorporate a complete EMS model developed in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
• Tier 4: Environmental Star. Facilities culminate their environmental management activities by completing an audit cycle and receiving ISO 14001 certification from the International Standards Organization.

Boyle noted that in an industry-wide effort to address environmental impact, the issue has been declared “non-competitive,” meaning companies openly share information as it relates to environmental issues and solutions to the problems presented. “MAPS will help provide the guidance and acknowledgement needed to propel this industry forward, ensuring that we are making positive steps toward improving the environment,” said Boyle.
