DEHAVEN TO SPEAK AT AMIF BSE BRIEFING

Washington, D.C., January 12, 2004 -- Dr. Ron DeHaven, deputy administrator of veterinary services for the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will be speaking at the American Meat Institute Foundation's BSE Briefing on Feb. 3, 2004 at The Fairmont Washington, D.C. The briefing will provide specific, up-to-the-minute information about the recently diagnosed case of BSE in the United States.

Dr. DeHaven provides leadership in safeguarding animal health and directs a national staff. Previously, Dr. DeHaven served as the Acting Associate Administrator for APHIS; Deputy Administrator for the Animal Care (AC) unit of APHIS, administering the Animal Welfare Act and the Horse Protection Act; AC's Western Regional Director in Sacramento, California. A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, DeHaven earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Purdue University and a MBA from Millsaps College. He also spent 4 years in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps before beginning his career with APHIS.

The briefing is scheduled for 8am - 5:00pm. It will review actions taken by industry and government, offer updates on international trade, and discuss what plans are in place to address other critical issues that may lie ahead. Agenda topics of discussion include:
