Agricultural Marketing Service Administrator A.J. Yates Will Address Special Breakfast at AMI Annual Convention

Washington, DC—Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Administrator A.J. Yates will speak at a special breakfast October 25 during the AMI Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase in New Orleans, LA, October 24 –26, 2002.

As part of an educational opportunity offered at the convention, meat and poultry industry representatives will be able to meet and speak with Yates, whose agency ensures the fair and efficient marketing of U.S. agricultural products including meat and poultry.

Yates accepted his post last September after eight years as deputy secretary and later under secretary at the California Department of Food and Agriculture. At CDFA, Yates oversaw a number of divisions including Food Safety, Animal Health, Inspection Services and Marketing Services. Yates served most recently as a senior consultant with Panagraph Marketing Solutions.

Yate’s presentation is part of a special breakfast that includes three other USDA administrators: Donna Reifschneider, administrator of the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA); Garry L. McKee, administrator of the Food Safety and Inspection Service; and A. Ellen Terpstra, administrator of the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

The “Super Session: Coffee and Beignet with the Administrators” will be held Friday, October 25, 2002, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served first followed by presentations from the administrators.

The Innovation Showcase provides a forum for viewing new technologies and products for the meat and poultry industry. Featuring more than 150 exhibitors, the Showcase is recognized as the place for innovative industry suppliers to show their latest products and a place for informal business discussions. In addition, the convention offers educational opportunities including an environment/operations, government and public policy, management and finance and marketing conferences. The Annual Meat Industry Research Conference also will be held October 24 – 26, 2002.

AMI represents the interests of packers and processors of beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout North America. Together, AMI's members produce 95 percent of the beef, pork, lamb and veal products and 70 percent of the turkey products in the U.S. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Institute provides legislative, regulatory, public relations, technical, scientific and educational services to the industry. Its affiliate, the AMI Foundation, is a separate 501(c)3 organization that conducts research, education and information projects for the industry.
