Tuesday, May 17, 2005

Rep. Henry Bonilla (R-TX) was presented with the prestigious Richard E. Lyng Award, in recognition of his outstanding public service, leadership and contributions to the U.S. meat industry. The award was presented at AMI's board of director's meeting in Washington, D.C.

The award, presented by American Meat Institute (AMI) President and CEO J. Patrick Boyle, was created in 1991 and has been given to a handful of individuals who have truly distinguished themselves for their public service.

"Congressman Bonilla is one of our industry’s strongest and most effective Congressional allies, and throughout his Congressional career has effectively and creatively utilized his seat on the Appropriations Committee to thwart burdensome Federal regulations that would adversely impact the business community and the nation’s economy,” noted Boyle.

Bonilla is the first Hispanic Republican elected to Congress from Texas. His record reflects dedication to issues related to health, taxes, education, agriculture, national defense and small business.

Bonilla is currently the chairman of the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, which oversees the nation's agriculture funding, food supply inspection, FDA oversight and emergency disaster relief. The subcommittee also funds traditional programs including nationwide nutrition programs, the Conservation Research Program, the School Lunch Program and the Federal Food Stamp Program. He has served eight years on the House Appropriations Committee. Bonilla has also served as co-chair of the Republican National Convention in 2000 and 2004.

The Lyng award is named after the late Richard E. Lyng (1918-2003), former President of the American Meat Institute (1973-79) and Secretary of Agriculture under President Ronald Reagan. Past recipients of the Lyng award have included U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, Senators Richard Lugar, Trent Lott, Thad Cochran, and Pat Roberts, as well as Representatives Kika de la Garza and Charles Stenholm.
