Robert L. Peterson, who retired last month as chairman and CEO of IBP, inc., was honored tonight with the American Meat Institute’s (AMI) highest award, the Industry Advancement Award. The presentation was made at the Chairman’s Gala during the International Meat, Poultry and Seafood Convention and Exposition in Chicago, IL.

Peterson began his career in the meat industry during high school summer vacations on a cattle ranch in his home state of Nebraska. In 1961, he became one of the original cattle buyers for a start-up company called Iowa Beef Packers, now known throughout the world as IBP, inc.

During his career with IBP, Peterson worked in virtually every aspect of the business and became president within 20 years. Under his tenacious leadership, IBP grew to 70 food manufacturing facilities with $17 billion in annual sales and 52,000 employees.

“Bob’s career is not just about growing a business, but also about leading an industry,” said AMI Chairman W. Dan Wright, president and CEO of Wright Brand Foods, Ltd. in Vernon, TX, who presented the award. “During his tenure, IBP transformed the geographic and competitive landscape of our nation’s meat packing industry, building efficient, high-volume beef and pork plants in America’s heartland.”

Wright noted that IBP led the industry’s conversion from shipping carcasses to transporting boxed beef and remains at the forefront of the next evolutionary step to case-ready product. Also under Peterson’s leadership, IBP has been a leading contributor to the AMI Foundation, donating nearly $500,000 in the past two years for food safety research.

Peterson and his wife are active in numerous charities and community services, including the Boys Club, Ronald McDonald House, Junior Achievement and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
