AMI Officials Names to USDA/USTR Trade Advisory Committees

Washington, DC-American Meat Institute (AMI) President and CEO J. Patrick Boyle and Vice President for International Trade Leonard Condon have been appointed to key committees charged with advising the Administration on trade matters.

On September 17, Secretary of Agriculture Ann M. Veneman and U.S. Trade Representative Robert B. Zoellick jointly announced the appointment of Boyle to the Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee for Trade (APAC) and Condon to the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee on Trade in Animals and Animal Products. Committee members provide advice to the Secretary and the Trade Representative on negotating objectives, bargaining positions and other matters related to the development, implementation and administration of U.S. agricultural trade policy.

With the nations of the world poised to launch later this year a new round of multilalteral trade negotiations under the auspices of the World Trade Organization, these privates sector advisory committees are expected to play a crucial role in the development and pursuit of U.S. agricultural negotiating goals related to that important undertaking.

The APAC provides advice on overall agricultural trade policy objectives. Five commodity specific ATACs offer more detailed advice and information on matters relating to particular products. Congress established the private sector advisory committee system in 1974 to ensure that U.S. trade policy would reflect the country’s commercial and economic interests.

AMI represents the interests of packers and processors of beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout North America.
