Moyer Packing Company Receives Edward C. Jones Community Service Award

Washington, DC – Moyer Packing Company (MOPAC) of Souderton, PA, and its Chairman Curtis Moyer were honored today with the American Meat Institute’s Edward C. Jones Community Service Award. The award was presented during the Institute’s Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase, October 12-14, 2000 in Las Vegas, NV.

Moyer is a family-owned beef packer and grinder that employs 1,600 people. The award is named for Edward Jones of Jones Dairy Farm in Ft. Atkinson, WI, who was a model of community service in the meat industry.

In presenting the award, AMI Chairman Greg Page, president and COO of Cargill, Inc., said Moyer Packing is committed to stabilizing its workforce and providing employees with the tools they need to be positive and permanent members of the community.

To that end, Moyer assists its employees in purchasing homes by providing weekend classes that offer overviews of the home ownership process, by paying a portion of the down payment, by helping to locate assistance from state and local agencies, and by helping employees move into their homes. One Moyer employee told the local newspaper, “My home is like a dream in my life they made real.”

Moyer also provides English classes and assists employees with any immigration issues so that they may bring their families to the area as well. In an effort to show its pride in its company’s diversity, Moyer each year features several employees’ children representing different cultures on its Holiday cards.

Charities that benefit from Moyer’s generosity are numerous. Recipients include Grand View Hospital, North Penn United Way, Latino Social Services, Bethlehem Puerto Rican Cultural Association, Moravian College, the Mennonite Heritage Center and many other worthy organizations. Especially noteworthy is its effort to establish the Penn Foundation, an organization providing mental health services to the community.

“Moyer has a written set of business values that includes the statement ‘We believe profits are to be shared with employees, invested in our communities and reinvested in our business to keep us competitive into the future,’” Page said. “Clearly, these are values that Moyer and its employees live each and every day.”
