Six AMI Members Elected to AMI's Board to Serve Three-Year Terms

The American Meat Institute (AMI) today elected the six officers that will guide the organization through what promises to be a critical year for the meat industry. The announcement came during the AMI's Annual Business Meeting, preceding the 1997 AMI International Meat Industry Convention and Exposition at Chicago’s McCormick Place.

Elected to the chairmanship was Joel Johnson, president and CEO of Hormel Foods Corporation in Austin, MN. Johnson began his food industry career in 1967 at General Foods Corp., where he managed a number of national brands. In 1986, Johnson moved to Oscar Mayer Foods and was ultimately named executive vice president and general manager. He joined Hormel in 1991 and was elected CEO in 1993. Johnson holds an MBA from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.

Serving as AMI vice chairman in 1997-1998 will be Kenneth Taylor, president of Taylor Packing Co., Inc. and Taylor Industries in Wyalusing, PA. Prior to joining Taylor Packing in 1969, Taylor served in the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of captain. Taylor became president of the company in 1979. He received his B.S. in economics from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH.

Gregory Page, president of Cargill's Red Meat Group, Inc., in Wayzata, MN, will assume the position of secretary. Before being named president of Cargill's Red Meat Group in September 1995, Page was president of Cargill's worldwide beef operations, vice president of Cargill's Meat Sector and president of North American Beef. Page joined Cargill in 1974 as a merchandising manager for the Nutrena Feed Division. He is a graduate of the University of North Dakota.

W. Dan Wright, president and CEO of Wright Brand Foods, Inc., in Vernon, TX, was elected treasured. Wright is a certified public accountant. Prior to joining his family’s business in 1978, he spent six years with Arthur Young & Company in London, England, and Dallas, Texas. He received his B.B.A. from Southern Methodist University and his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.

McKenzie of Vermont President and CEO Mary Alice McKenzie, AMI's 1997 chairman, becomes immediate past chairman. J. Patrick Boyle was reelected by the AMI membership to serve an eighth year as the Institute's president and CEO.

"The upcoming year will be an important year for AMI as issues like the prevention of E. coli O157:H7. product recalls and the expansion of government enforcement authority get even more visibility in the media and the government,” said AMI President and CEO J. Patrick Boyle. Boyle added, "The expertise of the new officers will be critical to the direction of both AMI and the industry."

AMI represents the interests of packers and processors of beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout North America. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Institute provides legislative, regulatory and public relations services, conducts scientific and economic research, offers marketing and technical assistance and sponsors education programs.
