(Chicago, Ill.) Curwood, Inc. of Oshkosh, Wisc. and company President James Ransom were honored today by the American Meat Institute (AMI) as Supplier of the Year. The award was presented during the Chairman’s Centennial Gala, held during the International Meat, Poultry and Seafood Convention and Exposition, October 26-29 at McCormick Place.

Curwood, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bemis, is known throughout the world for technological leadership in high-barrier packaging and supplies innovative packaging materials and systems for food, beverage, household, industrial and personal care industries.

“Our suppliers truly can - and do -- play strategic, partnership roles in business success,” said AMI Chairman Bill Buckner, corporate vice president, Cargill, Inc. & CEO, Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation. “Curwood has been a key part of many successful partnerships.”

According to Buckner, the experts at Curwood have been innovators in the packaging world. Since their founding in 1958, Curwood has lived the corporate slogan - "the package makes it possible." Working collaboratively with packers and processors, the company has developed an array of packaging innovations, including:

• The first stand-up pouch engineered to withstand gas flushing and water post-pasteurization, which was developed with Tyson Foods.

• The first to introduce an EZ Open shrink bag adding a convenient peelable tab to a previously hard to open package for Hormel

• New packaging for the only fresh-frozen turkey that goes straight to the oven without thawing, developed with Jennie-O.

• One-of-a-kind EZ Peel® resealable packaging for Land-O-Frost luncheon meats.

“Curwood has been a remarkable innovator working with many meat and poultry companies and an active supporter of AMI and its trade shows. We are pleased to honor Curwood and company President James Ransom as the 2005 Supplier of the Year.”
