Timothy Day, chairman of
Bar-S Foods Co. in Phoenix, AZ, today was
honored with the American Meat Institute’s
(AMI) 2001 Edward C. Jones Community Service
Award. The award was presented during AMI’s
International Meat, Poultry and Seafood
Convention and Exposition in Chicago, IL.
The Edward C. Jones Community Service
Award is presented annually to a company that
embodies the charitable spirit of the late Ed
Jones of Jones Dairy Farm in Fort Atkinson, WI.
Day and his company were selected for their
sustained commitment to the Phoenix community
and all of their plant communities.
During the award presentation, AMI
Chairman W. Dan Wright, president and CEO of
Wright Brand Foods, Ltd. in Vernon, TX, praised
their efforts.
“When Bar-S communities
have needed a hand, Bar-S and its employees
have been there,” Wright said. “From
donations of food to scouting groups and
charitable organizations to time spent Climbing
to Conquer Cancer, Bar-S has a true concern for
its communities.”
In its
headquarters town of Phoenix, Bar-S was
recognized as one of the top ten per capita
corporate contributors to the Phoenix United
Way. During the 1990s, Bar-S also adopted a
local school attended by many needy students.
Bar-S executives tutored children during their
lunch hours and sponsored an annual all-school
celebration at the end of each school year.
In the late 1990s, when Oklahoma City
was devastated by a tornado, Bar-S was on the
scene feeding police and rescue workers. In
Southern California, Bar-S has fought hard
against cancer and other life-threatening
diseases as a major contributor to the City of
Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, CA,
which conducts research and provides treatment,
counseling and support for cancer patients and
other seriously ill people. Day received the
medical center’s Spirit of Life Award for his
tireless efforts in rallying the food industry
in support of City of Hope.
In 1996,
when AMI organized “Operation Wienerlift,”
which delivered a summertime picnic to
peace-keeping troops in Bosnia, Bar-S Foods Co.
was among the first and largest contributors to
the effort.
Most recently, Bar-S
received the Outstanding Clean Air Campaign
Award from Maricopa County’s Trip Reduction
Committee for encouraging ridesharing to
enhance Phoenix air quality.
“It is a
pleasure to pay tribute to such a worthy
company,” said AMI President J. Patrick
Boyle. “Bar-S’s tireless efforts set a
high standard for community service in the meat
and poultry industry.”
