Former FSIS Administrator H. Russell Cross Honored with American Meat Institute Industry Advancement Award

Former USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Administrator H. Russell Cross, Ph.D., director of IDEXX Food Safety Net Services Inc. in College Station, TX, was honored with the American Meat Institute’s (AMI) highest award, the Industry Advancement Award.

The award was presented at AMI’s Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase, September 17-19 in Philadelphia, PA. The Industry Advancement Award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to improving and enhancing this industry. Past recipients have included Bob Cassens, Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin, Temple Grandin, Ph.D. and Gary Smith, Ph.D., both of Colorado State University and Bruce Tompkin, Ph.D., of Armour-Swift Eckrich.

In presenting the award, AMI Immediate Past Chairman Joel W. Johnson, chairman, president and CEO of Hormel Foods Corporation in Austin, MN, said, “More than just about anyone, Russ has been a leader in bringing science, technology and training to both the industry and the government, helping our companies and government work toward safer food.”

Most recently, Cross was associated with Texas A&M University, where he founded the International HACCP Alliance. There, he worked diligently to be a HACCP training resource to meat and poultry companies and meat inspectors. Cross also headed the efforts to develop a wide range of comprehensive HACCP models that could be used as the industry implemented sweeping new regulations.

During his tenure as FSIS administrator, Johnson said Cross was accessible to industry and worked hard to ensure that the concerns of all his constituents, from consumer, to labor, to industry, were considered thoroughly before advancing regulatory policy.

“He has literally been a warrior for safer food,” said Johnson, noting that his efforts are continuing in his new role at IDEXX Food Safety Net, a company that provides an integrated network of services, including training, microbiological testing and consulting.

AMI represents the interests of packers and processors of beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout North America. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Institute provides legislative, regulatory and public relations services, conducts scientific and economic research, offers marketing and technical assistance and sponsors education programs.
