Australian Animal Behavior Expert Dr. Paul Hemsworth to Keynote International Meat Animal Welfare Research Conference

Australian Animal Behavior Expert Dr. Paul Hemsworth, professor at the University of Melbourne, will headline the 2006 International Meat Animal Welfare Conference (IMAWRC), cosponsored by the AMI Foundation, Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS) and the American Meat Science Association (AMSA). The IMAWRC immediately precedes the AMI Foundation Animal Care & Handling Conference, Feb. 23-24, 2006.

“We are truly honored that Dr. Hemsworth will bring his unique expertise to the 2006 IMAWRC,” said Dr, Randy Huffman, vice president of scientific affairs at the American Meat Institute Foundation.

Dr. Hemsorth directs the University of Melbourne’s Animal Welfare Science Center and is one of the world’s leading experts on the social, physical and human factors impacting farm animal welfare and behavior. He has studied the human-animal relationship in animal production extensively. He has authored 120 refereed papers, 150 book chapters and a book.

Hemsworth is an adjunct professor in The Ohio State University Department of Animal Science.

The research-focused IMAWRC will also focus on genetics and their impact on animal behavior and welfare with a presentation by Dr. William Muir of Purdue University; housing and environmental conditions for pigs, featuring a presentation by Dr. Stan Curtis of the University of Illinois; housing and environmental conditions for pigs with a presentation by Terry Mader of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; CO2 stunning, which will be addressed by Leif Christenson of the Danish Meat Research Institute; alternative methods of cattle stunning by Dr. Temple Grandin of Colorado State University; euthanasia by Dr. Wendy Underwood of Eli Lilly; animal handling and beef quality by Dr. Dan Hale of Texas A & M; animal handling and pork quality by Dr. Steve Lonergan of Iowa State University; religious slaughter by Dr. Joe Regenstein of Cornell University and optimal transportation for ensuring welfare by Jeff Hill of Premium Standard Farms.

Registration for the IMAWRC is $150 for AMI, FASS and AMSA members; $250 for non-members.
