Thursday, September 17, 1998

Total U.S. meat and poultry production exceeds 76 billion pounds in 1997, and industry sales topped $100 billion, according to Meat and Poultry Facts 1998, released today by the American Meat Institute (AMI).

Now available in its 27th edition, Meat and Poultry Facts is the premier statistical publication of the meat and poultry industry. In more than 50 pages of charts, tables and graphics, AMI presents data and trends about livestock cycles and prices, livestock and poultry slaughter and meat production, industry sales and capital expenditures, employee number, wage levels and worker safety statistics, meat and poultry prices at different levels of the marketing chain, per capita consumption of and consumer spending on meat and poultry, and foreign trade and foreign markets.

Meat and Poultry Facts 1998 reports that per capita expenditures on meat and poultry reached $428.01, an increase of $77.67 from 1987. Per capita consumption in 1997 totaled 208.6 pounds, up from 198.5 pounds in 1987.

Meat and Poultry Facts 1998 data on international trade shows that 1997 was a strong year for the industry. Despite late year turmoil in foreign markets, the U.S. continued to expand its exports of livestock, meat and related products, generating a total export value of $10.565 billion. Within that total, the net export value of red meats increased to 104 million pounds.
Meat and Poultry Facts 1998 provides essential details to accurately identify trends in the meat and poultry industry. No other publication compiles as wide a range of information in as clear and understandable a format as Meat and Poultry Facts.

“The American Meat Institute believes Meat and Poultry Facts 1998 is useful in promoting a better understanding of the dynamic American meat and poultry industry,” said J. Patrick Boyle, AMI President and CEO.

Meat and Poultry Facts 1998 was compiled by AMI’s Manager of Regulatory Affairs Susan Backus and Vice President of Regulatory and Industry Affairs and Chief Economist Jens Knutson, using data gathered from official U.S. sources, including the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Commerce.
