Washington, DC - Veteran meat industry journalist Dan Murphy will join the American Meat Institute (AMI) this month as vice president of public affairs, AMI President J. Patrick Boyle announced today.

In his new role, Murphy will develop public affairs strategies, oversee general and trade media relations and manage the Institute’s on-line news reporting efforts. He currently serves as editor of Meat Marketing and Technology, a position he has held since 1999, and as senior columnist for Meatingplace.com.

From 1992 to 1994, he was editor of National Provisioner. In addition, he served on the staff of Meat Processing from 1982 to 1987 and served as editor from 1987 to 1992.

Throughout his career, Murphy has been known for outstanding business reporting. More recently, thousands of readers have “clicked” Meatingplace.com every Friday to read his thought-provoking commentaries on many controversial topics, from the animal rights movement to country-of-origin labeling.

“Dan’s in-depth knowledge of industry leaders and issues will be an enormous asset to AMI and to the media who will turn to him for information,” Boyle said. “Through his writing, he has demonstrated his passion for this industry and his concern about the issues that impact it. We are gratified that he can put his skills and energy to work in a new way as part of AMI’s public affairs team.”

Murphy will report to AMI Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Professional Development Janet Riley. He will assume his new role on April 28.

Murphy received his B.S. in health science and journalism from the University of Oregon in 1982.

AMI represents the interests of packers and processors of beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout North America. Together, AMI's members produce 95 percent of the beef, pork, lamb and veal products and 70 percent of the turkey products in the U.S. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Institute provides legislative, regulatory, public relations, technical, scientific and educational services to the industry. Its affiliate, the AMI Foundation, is a separate 501(c)3 organization that conducts research, education and information projects for the industry.
