Koch Supplies, Inc., President and CEO John Starr Named AMI Supplier of the Year

Las Vegas, NV – Koch Supplies, Inc., today was named American Meat Institute Supplier of the Year. The award was presented during the Institute’s 2000 Annual Convention and Innovation Showcase, October 12-14, 2000, in Las Vegas, NV.

In presenting the award, AMI Chairman Greg Page, president and COO of Cargill, Inc., noted the company’s many contributions to the success of the meat industry. During the 1960s, Koch introduced the first unsupported web, automated vacuum packaging machine in North America that started a packaging revolution. This development lead to the elimination of film waste and reduced film costs. In 1980, Koch made its first Ultravac vacuum chamber machine, which has become the best selling line of U.S. made packaging machines in America.

Koch also has made enormous contributions to more humane stunning systems through its line of captive bolt stunners. Their development of lead-free cartridges also improved workplace safety for workers.

The industry has benefited from significant cost savings as a result of Koch’s direct mail business to business model that reduces the expense of procurement. Along the same lines, Koch has instituted in-plant storerooms for plant operating supplies, which has drastically reduced acquisition costs for these items as Koch provides automatic replenishment, consignment inventory and consolidated billing.

“Most recently, Koch made significant financial contributions to the 2000 Meat Marketing Conference in Kansas City,” Page said. “While retailers and meat marketers aren’t Koch’s target audience, they supported the conference in their hometown because that’s just the kind of company they are.”

AMI is not the first to recognize Koch. Meat and Poultry Magazine earlier this year named the company winner of the its first Annual Customer Service Award.
