Attorney Mark Dopp To Join American Meat Institute As Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and General Counsel

The American Meat Institute (AMI) today announced that Washington attorney Mark Dopp will join the Institute April 1, 1999, as senior vice president, regulatory affairs and general counsel. Dopp joins AMI from the Washington, DC office of Hogan & Hartson, where he has been a partner since 1993 and practiced law since 1989. He has served as AMI’s outside general counsel since 1995.

In his new role at AMI, Dopp will lead the Institute’s regulatory affairs department in efforts to help the industry influence and comply with regulatory mandates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its various agencies. Supervising a staff of eight, Dopp will be responsible for helping AMI develop regulatory policy and strategies in the areas of meat and poultry inspection, labeling, grading, industry economics and structure and international trade.

“Mark Dopp is well known and respected throughout the meat and poultry industry,” said AMI President J. Patrick Boyle. “He brings tremendous strength and credibility to our organization, both as a regulatory expert and a legal expert.”

Dopp has represented not only AMI, but also numerous corporations and individuals in the meat and livestock industries during his 10 year tenure at Hogan & Hartson. He has advised clients on virtually all aspects of food and agricultural law and has represented clients in enforcement cases brought by federal agencies. In addition to his detailed knowledge of and experience with USDA meat and poultry regulations and related statutes, Dopp is knowledgeable about federal food stamp, school food service and nutrition programs. Prior to joining Hogan & Hartson, Dopp was in private practice for several years.

In the mid-1980s, Dopp was a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of General Counsel. In that role he represented both the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in legal matters of concern to USDA’s internal legal apparatus. In that role, he gained firsthand knowledge of the legal considerations which impact USDA’s meat and poultry inspection program – knowledge which has been extremely valuable in his later role advising meat industry clients.

Mark Dopp earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, and his master’ degree in the same subject from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. He received his law degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO. A former Wisconsin native, Dopp and his daughter, Kerrigan, reside in Fairfax, VA.
